For the third year consecutive year, Travco Group achieved immense success in organizing the Rally of the Pharaons. Alongside the Italian organizers JVD International, Travco Group, the leading leisure company in Egypt, organized the International Cross Country Rally of the Pharaons2008, and the event was held under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism, in corroboration with the Egyptian Travel Authority, Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Environment, Supreme Council of Antiquities, National Security, National Intelligence, EgyptAir as the official carrier and Total as the main sponsor. The event is held under the supervision of the FIM and in coordination with the FIA and in association with the ATCE (Automobil Club of Egypt).
The most renowned sports event attracted pilots from 24 nations around the world, namely Russia, Brazil, France, Italy, Egypt, United Kingdom, Austria, Spain, Qatar, Dubai, Belgium, Germany, Guatemala, Greece, Hungary, Switzerland, Norway, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Argentina, Uruguay, Finland, Chile, and Canada.
The top 5 winners in the Cars category were world renowned pilots Lavieille Christian, Sireyjol Patrick, Pelichet Jerome, Billaut Gilles, and Pelichet Edmond – all from France. As for the Motorbikes, the 5 winners were world champion Casteu David from France, Verhoeven Frans from Holland, and Zanotti Alessandro, Manca Luca, and Polli Oscar from Italy.
The 2008 Rally ran in seven stages starting in the Pyramids area toward Bahareya and Siwa. The second stage was a loop centered on the Bahareya oasis with the track leading South toward Farafra, and back to the oasis of the 3000 mummies.
To get to the fourth stage, the pilots headed straight to Siwa. The usual loop Siwa – Siwa foresaw the fifth stage - a full immersion in the dunes of the Great Sand Sea surrounding the most beautiful Egyptian oasis.
To reach the sixth stage, pilots moved during the day from Siwa toward Bahareya, followed by the final trip back to Cairo on October 11th, where the competition had covered all seven stages, with the final boardwalk in front of the Giza Pyramids.
The rally was concluded with an extravagant gala dinner on October 12th, which was organized by Travco. All pilots, organizing companies, sponsors, and journalists attended the event honoring the winners of the Rally of the Pharaons 2008. Jacky Ickx, one of the partners in JVD International, distributed the prizes amongst the winners, and the evening wrapped up with a delectable dinner.
An event of this scale and importance attracted more than 250 global media specialists, and the coverage shed light on one of the major touristic attractions in Egypt, the western desert, for its picturesque landscape and oases that for many years has attracted pilots to compete in this action-filled sports event and take on the challenging adventure of the intriguing desert environment.
